Sports Foundations I/II
Level I focuses on body awareness, impulse control, settling, playing, working through distractions, and overall engagement with you. These skills not only prepare for your dog for sports - they also improve your working relationship with your dog in day to day life. The sports class will focus on agility, but also touch on rally obedience and scent detection. This class will teach your dog confidence, safety, and body awareness on equipment such as cones, wobble boards, cavetti, tunnels, and planks. This course will introduce handlers to several crosses such as post turn, front cross and blind cross. All exercises will be adapted to the dogs age and fitness - no high impact exercises.
Level II prepares your dog for Agility I by introducing them to to more complex exercises, and working through the addition of speed, distance, and distractions. Jump work will be introduced, along with how and when to increase jump heights. As the dogs begin to love equipment, self-regulation/impulse control will again become a factor to work through. This course will begin to chain multiple small objects together, increasing your dogs ability to stay connected in motion. In addition, it will expand on how to use front, rear, and post turns to indicate directions and turns, as well as introducing handlers to rear crosses. All exercises will be adapted to the dogs age and fitness - very little high impact exercises.
Agility
This course will focus on advanced, excellent and versatility signs. In addition, this will include taking your training 'on the road' through coursework. One key component to advanced rally is the ability to send your dogs to specific agility equipment, so these skills will also be covered, with exercises you can do at home with minimal space. Working exercises will also be expanded on, which are complimentary to the distance skills needed in traditional rally
Scent
This class introduces dogs and handlers to the sport of scent detection following SDDA (Scent Detection Dogs Association) guidelines, where dogs learn to locate a target odor hidden within a search area and communicate their find to their handler through a trained alert. Teams will build foundational skills including odor imprinting, search patterns, and clear handler-dog communication, progressing at each dog’s own pace toward eventual trial readiness. No prior experience is necessary — just a willingness to let your dog use their nose and have fun! This class is perfect for dogs of all breeds, ages, and temperaments, including those who may be reactive or need more space, as SDDA trials are run without other dogs present in the search area. Challenges will be set appropriate to the students registered in the class.
Tricks
This class introduces dogs and handlers to the fun world of trick training following Do More With Your Dog (DMWYD) titling guidelines, where teams learn a variety of tricks ranging from simple to advanced while building confidence, focus, and a stronger bond between dog and handler. Students will work through tricks aligned with DMWYD’s Novice level requirements, learning proper cueing, shaping, and luring techniques along the way, with the option to pursue an official title upon course completion. No prior experience is necessary — this class is open to dogs of all ages, breeds, and skill levels, and is a great way to keep your dog’s mind engaged while strengthening your teamwork. Whether you’re looking to earn a title or just want to teach your dog some fun new party tricks, this class offers something for every team!
Freestyle Dance
This class introduces dogs and handlers to the creative, expressive sport of canine freestyle, where teams choreograph a routine of heelwork and tricks set to music, blending obedience with showmanship and fun. Students will learn foundational freestyle moves such as spins, weaves, pivots, and leg work, along with the timing and handler body language needed to build a seamless, musical routine with their dog. No prior dance or competition experience is necessary — just a willingness to get creative and move together as a team! This class is a wonderful way to deepen communication and connection with your dog while building coordination, flexibility, and confidence, and is open to dogs and handlers of all skill levels who want to turn everyday training into a performance.
Progression Examples
This is the recommended progression, as each 8 week session is built upon iteratively. Agility classes are only open to those who have done sports foundations, have done agility at other schools, or those already competing. Please note that as an agility club, TailWinds agility levels may be more challenging.
