Intro to Rats!
This mini course introduces your dogs to searching for rats. The rats are part of the TailWinds crew and are fully socialized. During class they are safely in a tube/cage so that they cannot be accidentally hurt. This course uses your dogs natural and instinctive reaction to search for and locate hidden (contained) rats, and to ‘alert’ to tell you they discovered a rat. This class will focus on your dogs natural alerts, how to create a formal alert, and how to build drive . Natural alerts are what they do instinctively with no training, whereas a formal alert is something we train them to do. These skills are very similar to any scenting field (e.g. essential oils, search and rescue, bomb dogs, drug dogs) - but unlike other scents, rats are usually naturally exciting without extensive foundational training.
Progression Examples
This is the recommended progression, as each 8 week session is built upon iteratively. Agility classes are only open to those who have done sports foundations, have done agility at other schools, or those already competing. Please note that as an agility club, TailWinds agility levels may be more challenging.
